9 Chinese universities have different admission standards in different hukou zones. For example, a high school graduate with Beijing urban hukou could get into the top Beijing University with a college entrance exam score 20–50 per cent lower than an rejected applicant who has a rural hukou from Hubei or Anhui provinces. The main reason was that all the universities were ordered by the state to have disproportionally large quota for applicants from major cities where they are usually located.
